CALGARY -- After squandering away most of what once was a comfortable five-goal lead, the Toronto Rock turned to a pair of veterans Saturday night to hold off a late comeback. Kasey Beirnes scored a hat trick, with his last two goals late in the game set up by Colin Doyle, as the Rock held off a furious Calgary rally to open the NLL season with a 13-11 win over the Calgary Roughnecks. "Obviously they had the pressure on us and we needed to stop the bleeding in a hurry," said Beirnes, who also had two assists. Calgary trailed 10-5 in the third quarter and 11-7 in the fourth quarter before getting three unanswered goals to ignite the Scotiabank Saddledome crowd of 11,653. "We noticed that they were starting to cheat a lot more defensively to start catching up so that was a big part of it, a lot of their defence were taking off and it left me wide open and Colin found me two times," said Beirnes, whose clinching goals came at 11:51 and 13:46 of the final quarter. Josh Sanderson and Stephan Leblanc each scored twice for Toronto (1-0). Other scorers were Stephen Hoar, Jesse Gamble, Mike Hobbins, Scott Evans, Rob Marshall and Blaine Manning. Doyle had a game-high five assists. "Kasey and Colin with the back-to-back goals, what can you say, those were hard battles and these guys know what it takes," said Toronto coach Troy Cordingley. Shawn Evans scored three goals to lead the way for Calgary (0-1). Also scoring was Curtis Dickson with a pair, Geoff Snider, Jeff Shattler, rookie Joe Resetarits, Aaron Pascas, Daryl Veltman and Andrew McBride. It looked like Toronto had the game in hand after consecutive power-play goals from Sanderson gave the Rock a 10-5 lead halfway through the third quarter. However, McBride, the Roughnecks captain and a fan favourite, brought the crowd back to life with a rare goal. Sent in alone on a feed from Nolan Heavenor, the rugged defenceman beat Rock goalie Nick Rose at 14:18 for just his fourth goal in the last five seasons. Off the faceoff, Calgary went right back on the attack again with Veltman scoring just 19 seconds later. "Its about learning, its about getting better and understanding what we need to do," said McBride. "We didnt panic, which was a great sign. We were able to come back when we were down a couple goals and you have to take the positives out of that." The loss spoiled the debut of new Calgary head coach Curt Malawsky, who became the Roughnecks sixth coach in their 12-year history when he took over for Dave Pym in the off-season. Malawsky spent the last three seasons as an assistant coach. "Toronto had a good game plan. They came out and they executed and they handed it to us, but were young and were going to bounce back," said Malawsky. "This is a process for us. We want to see some adversity. Its all going to be proof in the pudding next week. If we learn from this and come out and win next week, thats what were looking forward to." Rose had 45 saves to record the victory for Toronto. The Roughnecks outshot the visitors 56-48. "We earned it," Cordingley said. "We played a 60 minute game, we played really well, played against a very good team. It takes a little pressure (off) going into tomorrows game." After knocking off the NLLs top team in the regular season from last year, the Rock are hopping on the bus and driving to Edmonton where on Sunday theyll meet the Rush, who lost to Rochester in the NLLs championship game last season. Notes: Calgary F Dane Dobbie did not play as he served a one-game suspension for a game misconduct in the Roughnecks season-ending playoff loss last May to Edmonton ... Calgary played its first game since the Dec. 20 retirement of Kaleb Toth, who had been with the team since it joined the NLL in 2001. Toth is the Roughnecks all-time leader in games played (16), goals (274) assists (354) and points (628). ... Pascas was acquired from the Rock in the off-season. Hotels will be full. Schools will close early. Coolers will be stocked and grills will be sizzling as a presidential speech goes largely ignored. As Kid Rock warms up for a pre-game concert, there will be no doubt that a bigger-than-big game is hitting the NFLs smallest market. Rodgers and Brees are the last two Super Bowl MVPs, leading the last two Super Bowl winners into tonights opener. You can watch coverage of the game live on TSN and TSN Mobile TV at 7:30pm et/4:30pm pt. For the league, its a chance to finally put away any lingering resentment from an off-season filled with ugly and tense — and ultimately successful — labour negotiations. For the Saints and Packers, its a chance to send an early message that they intend to contend again. Greg Jennings said it feels kind of like a "mini Super Bowl," but Rodgers wasnt quite willing to go that far. "Its a similar feel to a big game, a playoff game," Rodgers said. "I dont want to say the Super Bowl. Theres a big atmosphere outside the stadium. But the only thing that matters is taking care of business on the field." Brees knows no big-picture objectives will be won or lost in the first week of the season. "Im sure were going to get questions about future playoff implications and all that stuff about this game," Brees said. "We see ourselves as a great team and as a contender. They see themselves as a great team and as a contender. The fact of the matter is its one game and it just happens to be the first game of the season on a Thursday night on national television. But you just try to cut through all that and understand its just a game, and its just one game." After last years stunning playoff loss to Seattle prevented New Orleans from repeating, Brees knows firsthand about the scrutiny that comes after winning the Super Bowl. "You lose a game or something like that, its like people are just waiting for something bad to happen to your team so they can say, I told you so," Brees said. "Theres pressure with that, and obviously the expectation level after winning the Super Bowl, the thought being that, Hey, theres no reason why we cant go do it again. You just have to be careful that theres not a sense of entitlement there. It almost becomes even harder the next year because everybodys gunning for you." What Brees doesnt know is how the lockout will affect the Packers — or any other team, for that matter. The Saints got together for informal, team-wide workouts during the lockout, organized by Brees. The Packers didnt, and Rodgers and other Packers players have publicly dismissed those workouts as not being worthwhile. "We tried to simulate as best we ccould a normal off-season, albeit it wasnt at our team facility and we had to make other arrangements on our own and do everything on our own," Brees said.dddddddddddd "The hope was that that would be able to put us into a situation where we felt like we still had an off-season. ... It would feel like we were just going to training camp, just like we were every year, but we were a little bit ahead of the game and maybe would give us an edge." The Saints are recommitting to the running game and have some new faces to make it happen. Reggie Bush is gone, but Pierre Thomas returns after being slowed by an ankle injury last season. Hell be joined by free agent addition Darren Sproles and first-round rookie Mark Ingram. "Therell be plenty of touches not only for Pierre, but for Mark and Darren," Saints coach Sean Payton said. "And its our job to mix those up and also to let the running back get comfortable and get in a rhythm when hes in the game." New Orleans will be without wide receiver Lance Moore, who has a nagging groin injury. When the Saints are on defence, co-ordinator Gregg Williams loves to call blitzes. But thats where Rodgers is at his best. "The one thing about Aaron Rodgers thats most impressive is that he was the best quarterback last year against the blitz and the pressure," free safety Malcolm Jenkins said. "He gets the ball out of his hand quick, so weve got to find ways to create some things." Despite the condensed training camp, the Packers have added new wrinkles to their offence, including a no-huddle look that proved successful in the pre-season. The Packers also are getting at least three likely starters back from season-ending injuries: tight end Jermichael Finley, safety Morgan Burnett and running back Ryan Grant; Grant will split carries with James Starks. A fourth potential starter returning from injury, defensive lineman Mike Neal, has a nagging knee injury and his status for Thursday is unclear. The Packers think the reintroduction of those injured players, along with some incoming rookies who may play significant roles, will help them fend off any sense of complacency that may have prevented past Super Bowl winners from repeating. After spending last years Super Bowl run on the sidelines, Finley isnt shy about his goals. "Win the championship, man," Finley said. "If the chemistry gets back to where it was last year, its going to be all good from there." Rodgers thinks the Packers can be perennial contenders. "If you think about teams of the decades, those teams won multiple Super Bowls," Rodgers said. "The Steelers of the 70s, Niners of the 80s, Cowboys in the 90s, Patriots in the 2000s were multiple Super Bowl victors. We want to want to re-establish that tradition of going deep in the playoffs every year and making runs at Super Bowls." ' ' '
