MONTREAL -- It wasnt the prettiest goal of the season, but it looked delightful to the Montreal Canadiens. Defenceman Roman Hamrlik broke the teams longest goalless drought in 61 years when he banged home a loose puck off a wild scramble around the Atlanta net Tuesday in Montreals 3-1 victory over the Thrashers. "It was a big monkey off everybodys back when we popped that first one," said Habs goaltender Carey Price, who witnessed it from the far end of the rink. "It seemed that even to the bitter end it didnt want to go in. "It took us about 10 whacks to get in there, but we finally broke the eggshell." Mathieu Darche scored another only 11 seconds later for Montreal (41-29-7), whose 89 points is one more than they had all of last season when they finished eighth in the Eastern Conference. Andrei Kostitsyn added an empty-net goal, his 20th of the season, with 1:20 left in the third. The Bell Centre crowd of 21,273 leapt from their seats when Hamrlik shot from the right side, knocked the loose rebound into the crease, went around the other side and poked it in as a crowd of players jostled around the blue paint. "I got a nice pass and I should have scored on the shot, but the rebound was there," said Hamrlik after his fifth of the season. "I dont score a lot of goals, so it was nice." Some were still cheering when Darche was left alone at the doorstep to bang a Scott Gomez feed past Ondrej Pavelec. But the big sigh of relief was the first one. Since winning 8-1 in Minnesota, the Canadiens had lost 2-0 to Buffalo, 7-0 to Boston and 2-0 to Washington -- the first time they had been shut out in three straight since 1949. Hamrliks goal ended a 199-minute one-second drought since Tom Pyatts goal at 13:55 of the third period in Minnesota. "We all had a smile, even the coaches had a little smirk," said Darche. "And the fans were great. "People were talking about the fans booing us but thats whats special about playing in this city. They may be hard on guys when you struggle, but the first goal, it was like a Stanley Cup-winning goal in any other building." The Canadiens, with only their fourth win in 10 games, moved alone into sixth place ahead of the idle New York Rangers, who have a game in hand. Montreal plays Wednesday night at ninth-place Carolina, who stayed close in the playoff race with a victory over Washington. Montreal outshot the Thrashers 31-28. Nik Antropov scored a disputed goal in the third period for the 11th-place Thrashers (32-32-12), who saw their slim playoff hopes fade further with only six games to play. They opened a five-game road trip. The game may have been vastly different had Price not stopped Dustin Byfuglien in alone in the opening seconds of the game. He made an even better save on Eric Boulton five minutes later. The crowd booed Antropovs goal at 8:35 of the third. Boulton clipped defenceman Hal Gill near the eye, opening a gash, but no penalty was called as he collected the puck on the other side and fed Antropov going to the net. Price wasnt complaining. "After three shutouts in a row, Ill take the win," he said. "At the end of the day, it didnt cost us anything." Added Montreal defenceman Brent Sopel: "They didnt see it, but mistakes happen. I think it was good for us. We found a way to handle it and push back." The win had much to do with the Canadiens playing with far greater intensity than theyve shown of late and they managed to stay out of the penalty box early, which had been a drain on their energy during their drought. Gomez, the target of recent booing, had a strong game. The Canadiens play four of their final five regular season games on the road, with their last home game next Tuesday night against Chicago. Playing only his ninth game of the season since recovering from hip surgery, the veteran defenceman scored the go-ahead goal and added an assist in sparking a 4-3 win over the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday night. The goal came in Jovanovskis 1,100th career game and was his first since April 5, 2012. So forgive him if he had difficulty recalling the last time he scored. "Oh, has it been that long?" the 37-year-old said. "Im getting a little up there. But I think for me, having the opportunity to be in the dressing room and going out there and doing something that I love, thats a privilege." He even got a fortunate bounce in putting the Panthers ahead 3-2 with 1:04 left in the first period. Jovanovskis shot from the top of the left circle deflected in off the stick of Sabres defenceman Mike Weber. With Jovanovski providing the offence, another member of the Panthers old guard did his part to ensure the lead stood up. Veteran goalie Tim Thomas stopped 32 shots, including 15 in the final period to improve to 7-3-2 in his past 12. "Yeah, it was a little bit of chaos there for a while," the 39-year-old Thomas said. "But it must have been entertaining for the fans. And I can laugh at it because we came out on top." The Panthers (20-23-7) improved to 4-2-1 in their past seven, and secured wins on consecutive nights. Florida was coming off a 5-1 win at Pittsburgh that snapped the Penguins franchise-record home winning streak at 13. Sean Bergenheim, Jesse Winchester and Nick Bjugstad also scored for Florida, which improved to 4-0-1 in its past five trips to Buffalo. Tom Gilbert set up two goals in helping the Panthers overcome a pair of one-goal first-period deficits. Drew Stafford scored twice and Steve Ott also scored for the Sabres (13-28-7), who dropped to 0-2-2 in their past four. Otts goal 8:36 into the third period cut the Panthers lead to 4-3, but the Sabres failed to capitalize on three power-play chances over the final 7:13. That included a 4-minute power-pllay after Panthers forward Brad Boyes was issued a double-minor penalty for high-sticking Sabres defenceman Henrik Tallinder.dddddddddddd "Obviously, it wasnt good enough tonight," Sabres coach Ted Nolan said. "We had a great opportunity for almost a minute and a half. We just didnt get shots through." Ryan Miller had a bit of an off night as well in finishing with 18 saves. Though the first three goals he allowed all came on deflected shots, he gave up a soft one in allowing Bjugstad to put the Panthers up 4-2 with 3:48 left in the second period. Driving up the left wing, Bjugstad snapped a shot that beat Miller high on the short side. "It wasnt one of my better games," said Miller, who had allowed eight goals in his past four (2-0-2). "Ive got to get myself into a little better spot where Im in better position." Thomas, by comparison, was solid. He was particularly sharp on back-to-back chances the Sabres had early in the third period to preserve a 4-2 Panthers lead. First, Thomas got his glove out to get a piece of Staffords shot from the left circle on a 2-on-1 break 90 seconds into the frame. Some 40 seconds later, Thomas got his glove up to foil Cody Hodgson, who was in alone, to preserve the two-goal edge. Thomas had no chance on either of the three goals he allowed. Both of Staffords goals came from the slot. And Ott scored during a scramble in front and after Thomas stopped Staffords attempt to jam the puck in at the right post. Panthers rookie centre Aleksander Barkov did not return after sustaining a lower-body injury late in the first period. Without going into detail, coach Peter Horachek said Barkov was kept out as a precaution and likely could have returned. Horachek didnt expect the injury to be long term. NOTES: Sabres D Tallinder returned after missing eight games with an upper-body injury. ... Both teams entered the night having identical 9-9-7 records this season in games decided by one goal. ... Staffords opening goal came on the man advantage, ending the Panthers streak of 29 consecutive power-plays without a goal. The streak is tied for fifth on the team list, and seven short of matching the record set Feb. 16-29, 2004, according to STATS. cheap nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys ' ' '
