SHENZHEN, China (CIS) – The Canadian mens basketball team is one win away from a medal at the 26th Summer Universiade after a resounding 71-58 victory over Romania in their quarter-final game on Saturday night. Canada will face Lithuania on Sunday in the first semifinal at 12:30 p.m. local time (12:30 a.m. ET) This marks the 12th semifinal appearance in 20 trips to the FISU tournament for Canada. The Canucks have won one gold, three silver and four bronze, while the last Canadian appearance on the podium was in 2007 thanks to a third-place finish in Bangkok. Canada will challenge a Lithuanian (5-1) team that played giant killers on Saturday, downing the previously undefeated United States 76-74 thanks in large part to Gediminas Oreliks 19-point performance. Canada played an exhibition against Lithuania before the tournament started, and ironically enough, the game ended in a 77-77 tie. "[The exhibition] feels like a million years ago," said Team Canada head coach Kevin Hanson on playing Lithuania. "But I think once we take a look at some film and the guys get on the court, muscle memory will kick in." On Saturday, it was Ottawas Tyson Hinz who paced the Canadians, scoring a game-high 23 points, including eight in the first quarter. The reigning Canadian Interuniversity Sport player of the year from Carleton University battled through foul trouble in the first half, but helped generate a 14-to-2 run to start the third quarter that gave the Canadians the lead outright. "We knew what we had to do and we came out hungry," said Hinz of the third quarter surge. "Our goal is to win a gold medal at this tournament, and that is still our goal, but we have only been focusing on our next game, so now our focus shifts to Lithuania." Cole Hobin, of Ashton, Ont., drew the toughest defensive assignment of the night, playing 36 minutes glued to Vlad Moldoveanu, the tournaments leading scorer. The 6-foot-9 forward averaged 22.2 points per game entering Saturday and didnt leave the court, playing all 40 minutes, but Hobin locked down Moldoveanu, holding him to only 13 points and six total field goal attempts. "We challenged Cole last night and told him that [Moldoveanu] was going to be his assignment, and he stepped up once again," said Hanson. "This team wants it, they are a resilient group and have a great ability to regroup at the half." In mens volleyball, the Canadians will fight for their third all-time medal at a Universiade on Monday after falling 3-1 (27-25, 25-23, 20-25, 25-10) to the Ukraine in their semifinal match. Canada has previously won two FISU silver medals in the sport, in 1983 in Edmonton and 2007 in Bangkok. Spencer Leiske of Lacombe, Alta., paced the Canucks with 13 kills, while Calgarys Rudy Verhoeff, the MVP of the 2011 Canadian Interuniversity Sport championship, added six blocks at the net and an ace. Canada (5-1) will challenge Brazil (5-1) for bronze on Monday at 5:30 p.m. local time (5:30 a.m. ET). In taekwondo, Vancouvers Yvette Yong was one win away from the podium but dropped a heart-breaking 3-2 extra time decision to Weichun Liao of Taiwan in the quarter-finals of the -46 kg category. Earlier in the day, Yong had opened the tournament with a pair of easy victories, defeating Hong Kongs Dickwah Sum 11-2 in her first fight and Khayala Guliyeva of Azerbaijan 7-0 in the round of 16.
