PHOENIX -- Nine days past his 26th birthday, Craig Kimbrel is the Atlanta Braves career leader in saves. That number figures to get a lot bigger before hes through. Kimbrel got the final four outs in the Braves 5-2 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday night, earning his 16th save of the season (in 18 tries) and 155th of his career. Thats one more than John Smoltz. Those 155 saves have come in 172 opportunities. "Ive been a part of a lot of good teams and had a lot of opportunities," Kimbrel said. "Having the chance my first full season to be a closer, that doesnt happen very often and thats why were sitting here talking today, because I had that opportunity a lot of guys dont have. "I feel blessed and grateful for it." Kimbrel had one save in 2010, 46 in 2011, 42 in 2012 and 50 in 2013. "Ive played with him for four years and some change and hes already the franchise leader in saves," teammate Jason Heyward said. "Thats pretty cool." Hayward drove in three runs, two with a home run, and Andrelton Simmons doubled in a run for the Braves. Julio Teheran (6-3) gave up two runs and five hits in seven innings to win his fourth straight decision. Didi Gregorius became the first Diamondback to hit leadoff home runs in consecutive starts. He did it Wednesday in Colorado, sat out Thursdays game, then did it again Friday. Arizonas Brandon McCarthy (1-8) allowed three runs and nine hits in 6 1-3 innings, striking out nine and walking one. McCarthy singled in the tying run in the fifth, his first career RBI. Kimbrel entered the game with two outs and a runner at first in the eighth inning and got his former Atlanta teammate Martin Prado looking to end the inning. With a three-run lead in the ninth, Kimbrel got Aaron Hill and David Peralta to fly out, then Tuffy Gosewich popped out to end it. It was just his third career four-out save. "He hadnt pitched since last Saturday," manager Fredi Gonzalez said, "so we were able to do that." The Braves broke a 2-2 tie in the seventh when, with one out, Heyward drew the only walk McCarthy allowed. Simmons lashed a double to the corner in left, scoring Heyward from first. The Atlanta leadoff hitter used his long arms to connect with a ball that was high and outside and drove it to the opposite field. "It was a pitch I dont expect to get hit at all," McCarthy said. "It was right where I wanted it. It was a hard four-seamer up and away and I wanted to use it to establish something else. He took a good swing at it and hit a home run. I was pretty surprised." They added another run in the ninth on Heywards RBI single. Right fielder Gerardo Parra robbed Simmons of an extra-base hit and probably saved a run with a diving grab in the ninth. Atlanta took the lead in the fifth when Jordan Schafer doubled over third base to start the inning. He scored on Heywards home run to left that made it 2-1. Gregorius, called up from Triple-A Reno on Tuesday, opened the game with a shot just over the fence in right. Teheran didnt allow another hit until Peralta, another recent arrival from the minors, led off the fifth with a ground-rule double. Teheran retired the next two batters, but McCarthy -- 2 for 23 for the season to that point -- slapped a single between shortstop and third to bring Peralta home and tie it 2-2. Ex-Diamondback Justin Upton, greeted with a mix of boos and cheers, struck out three times against McCarthy, then flied out to the fence in right and drove in a run with a bloop single in the ninth. Braves RHP Jordan Walden, recovering from a strained left hamstring, began a rehab assignment Thursday night for Triple-A Gwinnett against Columbus, facing four batters in two-thirds inning, giving up a run and two hits. He struck out the first three batters, but the third reached on a wild pitch. The next batter homered. ... On Saturday night, the Braves have RHP Ervin Santana (5-2, 4.10 ERA) facing LHP Wade Miley (3-6, 4.85). UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- The Montreal Canadiens have had few reasons to celebrate this season as they have been mired near the basement of the Eastern Conference. Scott Gomez, who hadnt scored in more than a year, has had even fewer moments to savour. But on Thursday, both the team and the highly paid forward both had a night to enjoy. Max Paciorettys first NHL hat trick and Gomezs first goal since last Feb. 5 lifted the Canadiens past the New York Islanders 4-2 as Montreal won its third straight game. Carey Price made 31 saves for the Canadiens and won for the fifth time in seven games. "I wasnt feeling sorry for myself, Ive just kept working," said the 32-year-old Gomez, acquired by Montreal with his sizable contract in an oft-criticized trade with the New York Rangers in June 2009. "Its certainly good to get a win, and of course its great to finally score." Gomez had seven assists in 24 games this season before Thursday, and seven goals in 80 games last season. He is in the fifth year of a seven-year, US$51.5 million contract he signed with the Rangers in 2007. "It was a big goal for us, proved to be the game-winner," Canadiens coach Randy Cunneyworth said. "We worked hard and the effort paid off. We have to get it going and keep it going." Pacioretty scored in all three periods as the Canadiens (22-24-9) moved one point ahead of the Islanders (22-23-8) in the tightly packed non-playoff section of the Eastern Conference. Montreals 53 points have the Canadiens in 11th place, nine points behind Toronto and the post-season cutoff. The Canadiens and Maple Leafs will meet Saturday night in Toronto. The Islanders scored twice in the last three minutes, but couldnt get even. "Price made key saves at key times," Islanders coach Jack Capuano said. The 24-year-old Price, who has also struggled this season, improved to 20-19-8. "Im happy for the team, obviously for Pac with three goals and Gomer for getting that gorilla off his back," Price said. "And it sure is nice to string a few wins together." Pacioretty scored his 20th goal of the season at 1:23 of the first on a wrist shot from the top of the right circle, beating goaliie Evgeni Nabokov, who was coming off a 45-save shutout of Philadelphia on Tuesday.dddddddddddd Erik Cole had the assist. A first-round draft pick by the Canadiens in 2007, Pacioretty made it 2-0 at 9:30 of the second. He completed his hat trick with an empty-net goal with one second left in the game. He leads the Canadiens with 22 goals. Gomez scored 9:50 into the third period with assists to defencemen Rafael Diaz and Chris Campoli. Matt Moulson made it 3-1 with 2:41 remaining on a power play, with an assist from John Tavares, who earned the 100th helper of his NHL career. Islanders captain and defenceman Mark Streit made it 3-2 just 48 seconds later, but New York couldnt muster the tying goal after pulling Nabokov for an extra skater. The Islanders are 6-2-2 in their last 10 and 11-6-2 in the past 19. Nabokov had won seven of nine outings, allowing one goal or fewer in six of those decisions. "It was frustrating at the start," Streit said. "We had a hard time getting back. There was not enough on our part." The game was the third of four meetings between the teams. The Islanders won 4-3 at home on Nov. 17, and the Canadiens earned a 5-3 victory on Dec. 13 in Montreal. It was the first time that Montreal has won three straight games since a season-best, four-game spurt from Oct. 26-Nov. 4. The Canadiens had home wins earlier this week over Winnipeg and Pittsburgh. The pressure to win in Montreal reached new heights this week as the Catholic church placed ads in newspapers asking fans to pray to help the team reach the playoffs. The Canadiens havent won the Stanley Cup since 1993, an eternity for the franchise with an NHL-record 23 Cup titles. They also won one Cup championship while part of the National Hockey Association. "Montreal is a beautiful place, we just have to keep winning," Gomez said. "Thats the bottom line." NOTES: The Canadiens are two wins away from 3,200 in franchise history, including the NHL and NHA years. ... The Islanders have scored 9,998 goals in their history, dating to 1972. ... Last season, the Islanders were 15-12-6 after the All-Star break. They are 3-1-1 this season since the break. ' ' '
