LONDON -- Andre Villas-Boas troubled eight-month reign at Chelsea was ended Sunday by Roman Abramovich, whose gamble on the inexperienced Portuguese backfired to leave the owner searching for his eighth permanent manager in nine years. Hiring the 34-year-old Villas-Boas, a former Chelsea scout, turned out to be a mistake that could cost Abramovich about $60 million and his team a place in the Champions League next season. A regular visitor at training recently, the Russian oligarch fired Villas-Boas a day after Chelseas first loss to West Bromwich Albion since 1979 left the club fifth in the Premier League, three points behind Arsenal in the final Champions League spot. "Andre Villas-Boas has parted company with Chelsea," the club said in a statement. "The board would like to record our gratitude for his work and express our disappointment that the relationship has ended so early. "Unfortunately the results and performances of the team have not been good enough and were showing no signs of improving at a key time in the season." First-team coach Roberto Di Matteo, a former Chelsea player and West Brom manager, will take charge of the Blues until the end of the season. "The club is still competing in the latter stages of the UEFA Champions League and the FA Cup, as well as challenging for a top-four spot in the Premier League, and we aim to remain as competitive as possible on all fronts," Chelsea said. "With that in mind, we felt our only option was to make a change at this time." Villas-Boas was hired in June to replace Carlo Ancelotti, who was fired after failing to win a trophy last season despite a league and FA Cup double the previous year. That change of managers cost Chelsea 28 million pounds ($45 million) in compensation. Villas-Boas is likely to receive compensation after being fired with more than two years remaining on a contract reportedly worth 5 million pounds ($8 million) annually. Amid reported unrest in the changing room, Villas-Boas struggled trying to bring younger players into the team while phasing out the older, big-earning stars such as midfielder Frank Lampard. "He has had to take on a club there with a lot of senior pros in the background; probably had a very, very difficult job," Newcastle manager Alan Pardew said. Villas-Boas attempts to revive Chelseas fortunes were not helped by Fernando Torres woes in front of goal, with the Spain striker failing to score in 22 club games and counting. Having repeatedly insisted he had the owners full backing, Villas-Boas appeared to acknowledge his job was under threat after the 1-0 loss to West Brom left Chelsea with just three wins in the past 12 league matches. "You dont get very much time these days and I genuinely couldnt be more disappointed," Sunderland manager Martin ONeill said. "I feel for him." Villas-Boas had just two seasons of topflight managerial experience when he was hired by Chelsea last June on a three-year deal. Winning four trophies with FC Porto last season had established him as one of Europes most highly rated coaches. He was dubbed by many as the "mini Mourinho," after the current Real Madrid coach who has been one of the most successful managers in Europe in recent years. Villas-Boas was a scout at Chelsea between 2004-07 under Jose Mourinho, who won five major domestic trophies in that time. However, Mourinho and successors Avram Grant, Luiz Felipe Scolari, Guus Hiddink and Carlo Ancelotti always came up short in the Champions League. Since Abramovich bought Chelsea in 2003, the club has enjoyed a trophy-laden period that contained three English titles, three FA Cups and two League Cups. But the Champions League is the competition Abramovich is said to be obsessed with, and the Blues face another season of failure unless they can overturn a 3-1 deficit to Napoli next week in the last-16 match at home. On Friday, Villas-Boas said he would "never" quit Chelsea. "Am I the right man for the job? Yes," he said. "I wouldnt have taken it if I didnt think that." Di Matteos first game in charge will be Tuesdays FA Cup fifth-round replay at Birmingham. David Amerson Elite Jersey . PAUL, Minn.SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Rudy Gay said he didnt harbour a sense of revenge Wednesday night facing his former team -- the Toronto Raptors-- for the first time since a December trade. His numbers said it all. DeMarcus Cousins had 25 points and 10 rebounds, Gay added 24 points and 10 rebounds, and the Kings held off the Raptors in the fourth quarter for a 109-101 victory. The Dec. 9 trade brought Gay, Quincy Acy and Aaron Gray to Sacramento in exchange for Patterson, John Salmons, Greivis Vasquez and Chuck Hayes. The trade has worked well for both teams. Since the shake-up, the Raptors have compiled an 18-11 record and own the third best overall record in the Eastern Conference. They had an 8-12 mark before the deal. Gay has thrived in his role as a key figure offensively. The versatile forward has averaged 20.7 points and shot 53 per cent in his first 25 games with the Kings. Gay wasnt nearly as effective with the Raptors, shooting just under 39 per cent in his second season in Toronto. "It was great to see Rudy have such a successful game tonight," said Gray, who didnt play. "No matter what the scenario, its really important when you go against your ex-team. You always want to show them what theyre missing. I think Rudy did that." Toronto coach Dwane Casey wished his team was a little more focused on effort rather than the socializing that took place between the two teams. "I just thought our whole disposition was off. Were out there hugging and giving out fives and all that," Casey said. "Well, this is a business. I didnt think our disposition at the beginning of the game was in fighting mode or hungry mode. We havent done anything, Ill keep repeating this, we havent done anything in this league yet." The Kings led by 20 points going into the final quarter, when Toronto got going offensively and cut the lead to five points with under a minute to play. But the Kings conveerted six consecutive free throws in the final minute to seal their second straight victory after losing seven straight.dddddddddddd "I think we kept our composure, were very poised down the stretch, and came out with a good home victory," Cousins said. Kyle Lowry had 21 points, eight assists and seven rebounds for the Raptors, who had won four of their last five. Demar DeRozan scored 18 points, Patrick Patterson 14 and Steve Novak 12, all in the fourth quarter. DeRozan, who entered the game averaging 22 points, shot 5 of 17. He added six rebounds and four assists. Novak played only 34 seconds through three quarters, but in the fourth he hit three three-pointers, helping the Raptors outscore the Kings 29-17. "The game was bizarre; we made it interesting," Kings coach Michael Malone said. "Im glad they didnt play Steve Novak more or it would have been a long night." Isaiah Thomas added 23 points for the Kings and guard Marcus Thornton had 12, all in the first half. Thornton hit the floor hard at the offensive end late in the second quarter and didnt return. He bruised hip and knee in the fall, but X-rays were negative. He may get an MRI on Thursday. New NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, who took over for David Stern on Saturday as the leagues fifth commissioner, attended the game. He drew a standing ovation when he was introduced to the sellout crowd Before the game, Silver toured Sacramentos planned downtown arena and sat with the Kings new ownership group during a portion of the game. NOTES: The Kings played without reserve forward Derrick Williams, who was out with a strained right foot. ... Despite shooting 37.5 per cent in the first quarter, Sacramento still led 30-23. ... Lowry was called for a technical midway through the second quarter. ... Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson, a former NBA star, sat courtside with William Bell, the mayor of Birmingham, Ala. ' ' '
