BASEL, Switzerland -- Roger Federer and Juan Martin del Potro advanced to the Swiss Indoors final on Saturday, setting up a rematch of their epic semifinal at the London Olympics. Top-ranked Federer brushed aside Paul-Henri Mathieu of France 7-5, 6-4 in the semifinals, after Del Potro eased to a 6-2, 6-2 win over third-seeded Frenchman Richard Gasquet. Federer has beaten Del Potro all six times they have met this season, though was pushed to his limits on Centre Court at Wimbledon in August. Federer won 19-17 in the decisive third set. "Im excited to see how he is going to come out and play," Federer said of Sundays final. "We have had a couple of tough ones, at the French Open and particularly at the Olympics. I had a really hard time breaking his serve. The margins are extremely small." Del Potro let a two-set lead slip in their quarterfinal at Roland Garros, and took the first set at the Olympics before losing the second on a tiebreaker. "I was close in the Olympics and French Open but I never beat him this year," said the eight-ranked Del Potro, who rebounded from the tough Olympics loss to win his bronze-medal match. "He has all the shots. Hes a very, very complete player." In doubles action, Torontos Daniel Nestor and Serbian partner Nenad Zimonjic advanced to the final with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Italys Daniele Bracciali and Frantisek Cermak of the Czech Republic. Federer, chasing his sixth title in seven years at his hometown event, fired 10 aces and never allowed 101st-ranked Mathieu a break point chance. Excellent anticipation at the net put Federer into position to hit a volleyed winner to create two set points in the first. He clinched with a forehand winner. Federer moved his opponent around the court in the final game before putting away an overhead to earn match point, and sealed victory when Mathieu netted a two-handed backhand. Federer has a 13-2 career record against Del Potro, though one of the Argentinians victories came in the 2009 U.S Open final. A wrist injury then wrecked his 2010 season. "Now he is finally back to his real self again," Federer said. "He looked really impressive today." Del Potro, who won the Vienna title last week, said his play against Gasquet was "almost perfection. Now I have to play better tomorrow if I want to win this tournament." His eighth ace sealed his 61st victory of the season, a career best. Del Potro improved to 16-1 on indoor hard courts in 2012, with his only loss coming against Federer in the Rotterdam final in February. Federer pulled out a 6-1, 4-6, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 triumph on Court Chatrier to advance to the second week at Roland Garros, pushing his consecutive string of major quarterfinal appearances to 36 -- or basically nine straight years. When addressing the media in Vancouver late Saturday afternoon following our live MLS on TSN broadcast at Empire Field, Whitecaps coach Teitur Thordarson couldnt hide his frustration despite seeing his side pick up a point from a 1-1 tie against the New York Red Bulls. Under other circumstances, a draw against a team that will be challenging at the Eastern Conference summit again this season would have been a positive outcome for Thordarsons men, but this was an opportunity the Whitecaps let slip away as their winless streak in the league extended to 11 matches. With New Yorks usually star-studded squad severely depleted due to injuries and international call-ups, the Whitecaps went into the game knowing it was a good time to face the Red Bulls, who headed north of the border on a four-match winless run of their own. There may have been some fans in the sell-out crowd disappointed not to see the talents of World Cup winner Thierry Henry up close, but the Frenchmans absence along with international call-ups for Rafa Marquez and Dane Richards denied the reigning Eastern Conference Champions of three key pieces in their team. Vancouvers inability to capitalize on the Red Bulls absences is ultimately the reason why fans left the stadium on Saturday feeling as though there should have been a greater return from the game for their team. What we saw from the Whitecaps is nothing new. Throughout the majority of their opening 12 games of the season, there has been no question of the hardworking nature of the squad put together by the club and the desire of the players to fight for the badge, but the missing element is the cutting edge in front of goal. With a near fully fit squad, the high-tempo first half performance from Vancouver was arguably the best of the season as Camilo and Shea Salinas caused problems running at the Red Bulls defence and Jay DeMerit anchored a backline which rarely looked troubled by a New York team relying on MLS newcomer Luke Rodgers and three-time Canadian Player of the Year Dwayne De Rosario to provide their attacking flair. When Eric Hassli scored his fourth league goal of the season to give the Whitecaps the lead at the midway point in the first half, it was a deserved reward for Thordarsons team, but an unfortunate slip in the penalty area by Alain Rochat led to New Yorks levelling goal just 10 minutes later.dddddddddddd Thordarson stated after the match that Rochat had been fouled in the buildup to the goal - an unfortunate incident that robbed Vancouver of the chance to take a lead into the half-time interval. With both teams coming off midweek matches in the Eastern time zone, it was understandable that the second half play would not live up to the fast flowing entertainment of the first 45 minutes. The Caps looked a little weary as the game wore on but still had chances to win the match with opportunities falling to Hassli and Terry Dunfield. They didnt create as many clear chances on goal as they had done in their previous home match against Toronto FC in the Canadian Championship, but once again the Whitecaps were unable to convert when the openings came their way. Having scored eight goals in their first two home games, they have now found the net only four times in their last five at Empire. The stalemate was Vancouvers fifth draw from seven home matches in their inaugural Major League Soccer season. After failing to take advantage at home, the Whitecaps now face three in a row on the road, and will only enjoy the home comforts of Empire Field once during the month of June. Five of the clubs six MLS matches in the month are away, including games which will be broadcast live on TSN at North West rivals Seattle Sounders, Canadian adversaries Toronto FC and a first visit to Kansas Citys new stadium. The Caps start the month against Chivas USA at the Home Depot Center on Wednesday night, and now must deal with their own international absences. Dunfield has been a valuable piece in their midfield but has joined up with Canadas squad for the Gold Cup, and Thordarson will also miss the ability to call upon Nizar Khalfans pace to influence games out wide, along with the depth in defence provided by Michael Boxall. We have seen plenty from Vancouver to suggest that they are capable of climbing up the Western Conference as the season progresses, but they will need a greater return from their road games through June to make up for missed opportunities at home.
