Ik haat burpees. De oefening waarbij je van een staande positie naar hurken beweegt en dan je benen achter je uit springt naar een opdrukpositie voordat je onmiddellijk je voeten weer naar boven brengt en dan omhoog springt - vele malen herhaald. Ik haat burpees, dus ik doe ze niet.
Gisteravond liep ik op Hampstead Heath. Terwijl ik rende, plotte en mat ik routes voor mijn hardloopgroep, probeerde ik gradi?nten te vinden die niet te stijl waren en circuits die precies de juiste lengte hadden. Mijn hardloopgroep bestaat uit 16 vrouwen. Velen van hen renden niet in jaren maar ze hebben zich aangemeld omdat ze willen starten en ze willen 5k rennen. Sommige worden gemotiveerd door gewichtsverlies, anderen door een beetje fitter te willen zijn en andere omdat ze denken dat het leuk klinkt.

Terwijl ik rondliep en routes voor hen ontwierp voor de komende paar weken, rende ik langs een personal trainer die twee cli?nten aan het testen was. Ze leken erg op sommige vrouwen in mijn groep. Het leek erop dat ze onlangs besloten hadden om te gaan trainen. Ze leken alsof ze worstelden en het leek alsof ze niet veel plezier hadden. Ze deden burpees.
Ik wilde naar hen toe gaan en hen vertellen dat dit niet de enige manier was. Die oefening hoeft niet pijnlijk te zijn en iets dat moet worden doorstaan, dat het leuk en lonend kan zijn.
