ST. LOUIS - The Miami Marlins have to be happy theyve seen the last of Kyle Lohse. The right-hander isnt the hardest thrower in the St. Louis Cardinals rotation, getting the job done by staying ahead of the hitters and keeping the ball down with good movement. Hes had the Marlins number this season. Lohse worked seven innings of three-hit ball in a 3-2 victory on Saturday, beating Miami for the third time this season. "As far as a pitch-maker goes, I think hes as good as anybody right now," manager Mike Matheny said. "Its just not trying to overwhelm people with stuff as much as making pitches. "It looked like he was commanding the ball well enough to get them to do what he wanted them to do." Tony Cruz hit a go-ahead two-run triple in the fourth for the Cardinals, who have won five of seven and snapped the Marlins three-game winning streak. Allen Craig had three hits and Skip Schumaker added an RBI single in the fourth for the Cardinals. The 106-degree heat didnt seem to bother Lohse. "I just tried to do my best to block it out," Lohse said. "The only thing you can do is keep the team off the field by throwing strikes, getting ahead of guys and trying to limit the damage." Marlins starter Carlos Zambrano didnt mind it, either. "Yeah, it was hot," Zambrano said. "I come from Venezuela, so it doesnt bother me." David Freese was hit by a pitch twice, walked and singled to reach base safely in all four trips. Justin Ruggiano hit a two-run home run for the Marlins, who missed a chance to climb back to .500. Zambrano (4-7) needed 102 pitches to get through five innings and Giancarlo Stanton lasted just two before leaving with right knee soreness, the injury that had kept him out four straight starts. Stanton, the Marlins lone representative in the All-Star game, will undergo arthroscopic surgery Sunday in Miami that manager Ozzie Guillen said could sideline him a month. "Hes a big bat," Guillen said. "This is our power hitter, the RBI guy. I think everybody out there has got to step it up a notch and try to cover the space. "We feel bad for the kid, but we cant feel sorry for ourselves." Jose Reyes, Hanley Ramirez and Carlos Lee, the top three in the Miami lineup, were a combined 0 for 11 with a walk and are 1 for 22 with two walks the first two games of a three-game set heading into the All-Star break. Lohse (9-2) is 3-0 with a 2.08 ERA in three starts against Miami, allowing nine hits in 21 2-3 innings, and found his stride after Ruggianos homer with one out in the third. The Marlins had two base runners the last five innings on a walk and a fielding error by Craig at first that was wiped clean when Reyes was caught flat-footed, getting picked off to end the fifth. Lohse has won his past three starts overall and has worked seven or more innings six straight times. He threw first-pitch strikes to 19 of 26 hitters. "I think Ive really figured out what it takes to be successful and thats going out and locating, not trying to overpower anybody, using my defence," Lohse said. "You look at how Im getting ahead of guys and then pitching off that, thats kind of been the key to my first half." Jason Motte allowed a pair of two-out singles in the ninth before getting Donovan Solano to foul out to end it for his 20th save. Stanton singled to start the second and with one out Ruggiano hit his sixth homer, a drive to left-centre to put the Marlins ahead. Ruggiano has 18 hits during a 10-game hitting streak. The Cardinals stranded four runners the first three innings before getting to Zambrano in the fourth with the first four batters reaching safely. Schumaker hit an RBI single and scored when Cruz followed with an opposite-field drive into the right field corner that scooted past Ruggianos attempt to cut off the ball. Cruz has started the past two games in place of All-Star Yadier Molina, who returned to Puerto Rico on bereavement leave following the death of his wifes grandfather. Zambrano lost for the first time at seven-year-old Busch Stadium after entering 6-0 in seven starts with a 1.73 ERA, the lowest among active pitchers at the ballpark. He lost for the second time in nine career decisions overall in St. Louis. "I know Ive pitched good, I didnt know it was the first loss," Zambrano said. "Theres always a first time and unfortunately it was today." Marlins reliever Wade LeBlanc struck out the Cardinals 3-4-5 hitters in the seventh and allowed one hit in three scoreless innings. OKLAHOMA CITY -- For all the Oklahoma City Thunder followers worried about whether the team will be able to afford a new contract with the NBAs Sixth Man of the Year, theres one person who doesnt seem fazed by it: James Harden. Harden heads into this season as possibly the odd man out in the Thunders young nucleus. Like Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and Serge Ibaka before him, hes eligible for his first contract extension and would become a restricted free agent if he doesnt get a new deal by next July. The difference for Harden is that small-market Oklahoma City, approaching the salary cap with all the others already locked into long-term deals, may not be able -- or willing -- to pay the luxury tax likely to come along with Hardens price tag. "Everything will figure itself out eventually," Harden said at the teams preseason media day Monday. "Right now, training camp is starting. I think everybody is excited to be here and just to enjoy each others company. We really missed each other." Harden predicted that hell agree to terms on a new contract by the end of the month and said that hes focused on "hooping," and not on the negotiations. "I have confidence in my agent and the organization to get it done," Harden said. "They know how important it is, so Im sure it will be done." Harden averaged 16.8 points and 3.7 assists last season, earning recognition as the leagues best bench player as Oklahoma City made it to the NBA Finals before losing to Miami. The core players from that run are back for this season, but could it be the teams last chance to pursue a title with Harden in the mix? "I just think about the first day of training camp. Thats all Im going to be thinking about," three-time NBA scoring champion Kevin Durant said. "Everythings going to work itself out." "James is a key part to our team. Were very excited to have him here. ... Its his fourth year. Just being with him that long, being with the rest of the guys thhat long, Im just excited to start a new season.dddddddddddd" Harden reiterated that he might be willing to make a sacrifice to stay in Oklahoma City and that he wouldnt demand a maximum contract. Durant and Westbrook also took slightly less than they could have pushed for, and both of the All-Stars were re-signed long before hitting free agency. At the end of last season, Harden suggested that the Thunder could be on the verge of creating a "dynasty" and he still feels a special bond to his teammates. "I think weve built a brotherhood here, a brotherhood these past years thats hard to break," he said. "Other teams, youre just teammates but were really brothers. We hang out all the time. We push each other to work hard every single day." Theres also a business side to it, though. General manager Sam Presti has repeatedly said the team would like to have Harden back but the reality of the situation includes a tough decision involving the salary cap and luxury tax. While title contenders such as the Heat and Lakers have exceeded the cap, the Thunder dont have the benefit of lucrative local television or arena naming rights deals. "Obviously, everybody would love to just say, Oh, yeah, weve got our team. James signed. But its not that easy," said starting centre Kendrick Perkins, who also has a long-term deal in place. "In a perfect world, it would be, but they still have business that they have to take care of. "At the end of the day, we still love James and were going to embrace him and hes still part of our team." Harden said he sought out advice several times from Westbrook, who started last season without an extension in place but agreed to one in January -- 15 games into the season. His plan is to keep his mind on basketball and not on his uncertain future. "Its tough, but I was in the same boat last year," Westbrook said. "Thats just how it goes sometimes. James is going to make the best decision for him and his family." ' ' '
