SEATTLE -- Tommy Milone wasnt surprised or overly impressed by the fact that he is the first Oakland Athletics rookie to win eight games before the All-Star break. After all, that is his job. Milone (8-5) allowed seven hits, struck out five and didnt walk anyone in Oaklands 1-0 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Monday night. It was the second straight superb outing for the left-hander, who threw the first complete game by a rookie in the majors this season in a three-hit victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers last Wednesday. He hasnt allowed a run in his last 14 innings. "Im out there trying to win games. Thats what Im trying to do," Milone said. "I have expectations for myself, obviously, that is to win games. Thats why Im here." Grant Balfour pitched one inning, and Ryan Cook finished in the ninth for his fifth save in seven opportunities. Seth Smith hit a first-pitch fastball from Erasmo Ramirez (0-2) 418 feet to centre field with one out in the second inning to provide all the offence. It was his eighth homer of the season. "I felt today that Zuk (catcher Kurt Suzuki) could have called any pitch and I would have thrown it in that spot," Milone said. "Thats the kind of game I felt I threw." Suzuki also sensed that he and Milone were in a zone. "Thats how I felt," he said. "Thats what I said hed do in spring training. Hes a guy who can throw the ball wherever he wants whenever he wants. Thats what he did tonight. I love what he brings. Hes real composed out there. He never freaks out." Milone, who came to the As in an off-season trade with Washington, had been in a tie with Rick Langford for rookie wins before the break. Langford had seven in 1977. As manager Bob Melvin said that Milone just gets it despite being a rookie who has made only 15 major league starts. "Hes out of the (Tom) Glavine style. You never know whats going on inside," Melvin said. "Hes very unemotional. With guys on base, he never looks like hes got any trepidation. He knows the situations. He knows when to pitch down. Hes got a very good knowledge of what he can do. Kurt also helps him out quite a bit." Over the previous eight games, As starting pitchers had allowed four hits or fewer. It was the longest streak since the team relocated to Oakland and matched the longest in franchise history, set in 1921. Jesus Montero singled to start the fourth inning on Monday for the fifth hit against Milone, ending the streak. The Mariners, who had a pair of singles in the fourth, still couldnt score. With runners on first and second and one out, Miguel Olivo ended the threat by hitting into a double play. "This guy Milone was throwing the ball perfect," Olivo said. "He was putting the ball on the corners really good. Corners in, fastball outside. Changeup really good." Ramirez, in his third career start, gave up three hits in eight innings. He walked one and struck a career-high 10. Coming into the game, Ramirez had only 13 strikeouts in his previous 10 appearances. "He was outstanding," Mariners manager Eric Wedge said of Ramirez. "I thought his focus was tremendous. He did a great job of keeping the ball down. "Their guy pitched a great ballgame, too. He was spotting the ball as good as weve seen a left-hander spot the ball this year. Inside, outside, good arm action with his changeup." It was the ninth time this season the Mariners have been shut out, and it was the 50th 1-0 loss in club history. Seattle has lost 10 of 15 and has gone 23 innings without scoring a run. Oakland tossed its eighth shutout and won for the 10th time in 13 games. Notes: The Mariners bullpen was 6-0 with a 2.29 ERA and had converted six straight save chances in the clubs previous 20 games, since June 2. Seattle relievers tossed two more scoreless innings on Monday. ... Melvin said outfielders Josh Reddick and Yoenis Cespedes are worthy of consideration for the All-Star game. The As havent had an All-Star position player chosen since 2003. ... Melvin plans to start Cespedes, who has had hamstring issues, in left field on Tuesday. He was the designated hitter on Monday. None of that mattered when Morgan was called safe then mobbed by his teammates after scoring the winning run in the 10th inning to lead the Brewers over the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-2 on Wednesday night -- the second late-inning thriller in a row for Milwaukee. Maybe their Sept. 15 bout isnt such a gross size mismatch after all. Maybe Lopez really has another shot at an incredible upset. The matchup is the latest unlikely chapter for Lopez (30-4, 18 KOs), a virtually unknown fighter outside of his native Southern California before last month. With just four weeks to prepare as a late replacement opponent, his stunning upset victory over welterweight star Victor Ortiz catapulted him to fame. After three prospective Canelo opponents were unable to fight, Lopez capitalized by accepting an invitation to jump up yet another weight class to take on Alvarez, the beloved young 154-pound champion and one of boxings most impressive punchers. Lopez already had one Rocky moment this year, yet he believes hes got a few sequels in him. "Im definitely the underdog again, but I give it my all in the ring," Lopez said. "I fight my heart out. I like to think I can take a pretty good punch." Lopez and Alvarez formally announced their fight at a downtown Los Angeles park in front of several hundred eager fans. While Alvarez and Lopez are only worried about facing each other, their promoters realize theyre also in for a fight in Las Vegas in two months. In a boxing rarity, this Golden Boy-backed card at the MGM Grand Garden will be held just down Tropicana Avenue from a major card for Top Rank, headlined by Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.s much-anticipated middleweight bout with Argentine star Sergio Martinez at the Thomas and Mack Center. Neither Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer nor Top Ranks Bob Arum blinked and moved his card off Mexican Independence Day weekend, one of the highest-profile slots on the boxing calendar. The Top Rank show is a pay-per-view event, while Golden Boys card is free to Showtime subscribers. "Were going to do what we need to do from a business perspective," Schaefer said. "Were not going to be influenced by what Bob Arum does. ... If you have a choice and you can afford to do a noon-pay-per-view, its probably in the fighters best interests to do it.dddddddddddd" Alvarez (40-0-1, 29 KOs) didnt flinch while a succession of opponents came and went in recent weeks. Veteran star Paul Williams accepted the bout just a few days before he was left paralyzed in a motorcycle accident, and James Kirkland declined the shot because of a shoulder injury and gripes about his purse. Ortiz then was promised the fight with Canelo, but his loss -- and the broken jaw delivered by Lopez -- knocked him out of the running. The door was open for Lopez, who sprinted through it. "Josesito has earned the right to fight Canelo, and he earned it the hard way -- with his fists," Schaefer said. When Schaefer first suggested Lopez could be a contender to face the 154-pound Alvarez, he raised eyebrows. After all, Lopez is a longtime lightweight who moved up to 140 pounds in 2008, but has never fought above the 144 pounds he weighed against Ortiz. But Lopez walks around between fights at more than 160 pounds -- and his height advantage was obvious in the staredown. Lopez also has plenty of experience against big guys: He has sparred with plenty, including Chris Arreola, the hulking heavyweight contender and fellow Riverside fighter. Lopez believes he has a shot against Alvarez, who has risen to the top while still learning the finer points of his sport. "Canelo, hes a champion for a reason, but hes not going to be hard to find," Lopez said. "Hes going to be right in front of me all the time, and I can take a bigger guys punches." A few hundred fans gathered mostly to catch a glimpse of Canelo, the red-haired Guadalajara fighter with a fanatical following on both sides of the border. Yet many fans also showed up to cheer Lopez, including a couple of guys in wrestling masks who rattled noisemakers for the underdog from nearby Riverside. Alvarez rejected the suggestion hes in a strange situation fighting an unheralded, upset-minded opponent. "I think everybody has something to gain," said Alvarez, who turns 22 on Wednesday. "My job is to get ready for whatever opponent I get. I know he won his way into this fight." ' ' '
