TORONTO -- Toronto FC coach Paul Mariner saw a thin squad at practice on Tuesday, but what he also saw was opportunity. The Reds will be without a number of regulars because of international duty, injury and suspension when they host the Portland Timbers in Major League Soccer action on Wednesday night. You can watch the game live on TSN at 7:30pm et/4:30pm pt. With the absences, though, brings a chance for some of Torontos fringe players to step up in front of the home crowd at BMO Field. "Its the same old story. Everybody wants to play so now people are going to get the chance to play," Mariner said. "Weve got experienced players in there so it should be a tremendous ding dong battle." Despite Mariners faith, TFCs defence has been hit especially hard. The newly-signed Darren ODea is with the Republic of Ireland for a friendly against Serbia, while Dicoy Williams (Jamaica) and Doneil Henry (Canada) are also on international duty. Logan Emory was expected to be back from his suspension for Wednesday, but because Toronto agreed to postpone last Saturdays game in Columbus so that the Crew could attend the funeral of teammate Kirk Urso, the defender will miss out against Portland. Add the injury problems facing Jeremy Hall and Mariner has few options for a makeshift backline that will likely include Adrian Cann and Ty Harden. "I just want them to relax and do the job," Mariner said. "I think that in the system, if everybody is doing their jobs to the best of their ability then well be OK because were in it together. "Were doing one-and-a-half jobs on the field when were out of possession. Thats the way youve got to think about it -- youve got to go the extra mile for your mate." Cann, who hasnt seen action in MLS play since June 16 because of a knee injury, looks set to start in the centre of defence alongside Richard Eckersley. Ashtone Morgan practised with the first team at leftback on Tuesday, while the out-of-favour Harden could see his first league action since April 7 on the right. "Im a competitor. Im always up for playing in matches and getting stuck in so Im excited," Cann said. "Itll be a good match. Guys that usually dont get to play a lot get an opportunity to show the coach what they have." Added Eckersley: "(Cann and Harden) arent new to the team. Ive played with them before. Its just a case of getting through the first ten minutes or so. Then I think everything will slot into place." Toronto goalkeeper Milos Kocic sees Wednesdays game as an opportunity for some of his teammates to show the coaching staff they belong in the regular starting 11. "I think everybody deserves a chance," he said. "I dont think its going to be a problem. I think we need to be focused first, get a couple of touches on the ball, get confidence and then as the game develops make sure we dont give up silly goals." But the defence isnt the only area of concern for Mariner. Also missing out for the Reds because of international callups are midfielder Terry Dunfield (Canada) and forward Ryan Johnson (Jamaica). "I always want our players to play for their national teams," Mariner said. "Terry loves his country with an unbelievable passion and I think its important that he plays for his country because how many more caps is he going to get at his age?" Aaron Maund was in the heart of the midfield at practice and could get the first start of his MLS career alongside Eric Avila, Reggie Lambe and captain Torsten Frings, with Eric Hassli and Luis Silva paired up front. Toronto FC (5-13-4, 19 points) sits last in the MLS standings and can overtake Portland (5-12-5, 20 points) with a win, but Kocic is wary of striker Chris Boyd, who has seven goals in MLS play this season. "He can strike from everywhere so I have to be very careful and obviously the defenders have to be very smart how they deal with him," Kocic said. "Its going to be a handful for the defenders, but I trust my defenders and I think were going to do a good job." Notes: Mariner said striker Danny Koevermans underwent surgery to repair his injured left knee in Toronto on Tuesday. The Dutchman tore his anterior cruciate ligament against New England last month and isnt expected back on the field until next May. ... Mariner also said that midfielder Matt Stinson has a thigh injury and will be out a month. Cheap Authentic NFL Jerseys.J. -- Darrelle Revis will be a shutdown cornerback again. The 34-year-old right-hander has a career 36-46 record with a 3.35 earned run average and 19 saves over 495 appearances between the Montreal Expos/Washington Nationals, New York Mets, Minnesota Twins, Florida Marlins, New York Yankees and Orioles. DENVER -- Coors Field has given Bronson Arroyo fits in his career, but the right-hander finally got the better of the place for one night. Arroyo pitched effectively into the seventh inning, Ryan Ludwick scored twice and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Colorado Rockies 3-0 Friday night for their eighth straight victory. Ludwick, Scott Rolen and Ryan Hanigan had two hits apiece for the Reds, who have won 12 of 14 since the All-Star break and tied Washington for the best record in the National League. "What it takes to win is pitching. Thats what weve been doing," Rolen said. "Pitching and defence. Its hard to lose if you shut somebody out." Friday, it was Arroyo providing timely pitching in the unlikeliest of places. Coming into the game he was 0-2 with an 8.84 ERA in three career starts at Coors Field. He put that disappointment behind with a strong outing against the Rockies. "The game plan here is always tough for me because I throw so many breaking balls and its hard to throw a sharp one in this atmosphere," Arroyo said. "Ive had a hard time pitching here and getting off to a good start I knew was going to be a huge key. We got lucky a little bit where things were kind of rolling my way." Arroyo (6-6) retired his first 11 batters before Carlos Gonzalez singled with two outs in the fourth. He started tiring as the game went into the seventh and let the bench know he was nearly out of gas. "He said, Hey, you better keep an eye on me this inning before he went out," manager Dusty Baker said. "We know he was treading on thin ice when that inning started. They hit a couple of balls on the nose and right at people. That was a pretty good indicator it was time to go get him." The right-hander left with two on in the seventh, but Alfredo Simon retired pinch-hitter Eric Young Jr. to end the threat. "I had the shakes a little bit," Arroyo said. "I didnt want them to be surprised because my pitch count was so low and I wanted to let them know I felt like I had thrown 90-something pitches instead of the 70 I had thrown." Arroyo allowed six hits and struck out three in 6 2-3 innings. It was the first time this season he won back-to-back starts. "Hes had a tough time here, but Im glad we got him back to 6-6," Baker said. Aroldis Chapman worked the ninth for his 20th save in 24 chances. Gonzalez and Jordan Paacheco each had two hits for the Rockies, who have lost seven of nine.dddddddddddd Colorados decline has resulted in some changes. After the game the team announced it had swapped infielders with San Francisco, sending Marco Scutaro to the Giants for Charlie Culberson. Scutaro, 36, was acquired in the off-season from Boston. "I really liked it here. Unfortunately, the season didnt go the way we expected in the beginning," he said. "Thats the way baseball is. Its a business and I get to go to a first-place team." The trade comes a week after the Rockies traded right-hander Jeremy Guthrie to Kansas City for lefty Jonathan Sanchez. The Reds broke up a scoreless game when they got to Rockies starter Drew Pomeranz in the fourth. Brandon Phillips led off with a single and moved to second on a fly to right. Ludwick followed with a double down the left-field line to score Phillips. Rolen singled off Pomeranzs right leg to put runners at the corners and Todd Frazier drove home Ludwick with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0. The Rockies threatened in the fifth when Pacheco doubled with one out to put runners at second and third, but Arroyo struck out Josh Rutledge and got Pomeranz on a grounder to end the inning. The Reds did most of their damage with the bottom half of the order. "You hope its somebody and you hope its consecutive guys," Baker said. "Thats how you score runs. You get a hit here, a hit there, you never really put on a threat. Everybodys pulling on the same end of the rope, everybodys doing their job and today we had different guys come through." The Reds added another run in the sixth. Ludwick walked with one out and Rolen singled to end Pomeranzs night. Adam Ottavino came on and threw two wild pitches that allowed Ludwick to score, making it 3-0. Pomeranz (1-6) gave up three runs and seven hits in 5 1-3 innings. He struck out five and walked one. NOTES: Rolen played in his 2,000th career game. ... The Reds eight-game win streak is their longest since May 31-June 8, 2006. ... On their off day Thursday, the Rockies visited victims of the Aurora theatre shooting at a local hospital. ... The Rockies activated 1B Todd Helton from the 15-day DL and optioned RHP Edwar Cabrera to Triple-A Colorado Springs. ... The Reds will send RHP Johnny Cueto (12-5) to the mound against Christian Friedrich (5-7) on Saturday. ' ' '
