ANAHEIM, Calif. -- When ace Jered Weaver limped off the mound with a back injury after just 12 pitches, the Los Angeles Angels probably figured their winning streak would be the least of their losses Monday night. After nine innings of relief pitching, 15 hits, three errors, two blown three-run leads, and 3 hours, 38 minutes of exhausting play, Mark Trumbos soaring homer ended an uncommonly meaningful victory for the revitalized Angels. Trumbo finished it with a shot to left into the sold-out stands, and the Angels overcame Weavers first-inning injury exit for their seventh consecutive win, a wild 9-8 victory over the New York Yankees. Trumbo connected on the final pitch from Cory Wade (0-1), circling the bases for a home-plate celebration accompanied by a few fireworks. After a horrible start to a season of high expectations, the Angels (25-25) are finally back to .500 for the first time since April 9. "I was super proud of the way we came together against a really good team," said Trumbo, who also doubled and tripled. "Of course theyre going to score some runs in that situation, but its huge the way we came back from the first inning on." Howie Kendrick and Kendrys Morales drove in three runs apiece for the Angels (25-25), who snapped the Yankees five-game winning streak. Mike Trout homered and Albert Pujols had two hits for the Angels, who got a hit from every batter. Los Angeles also survived terrible defence in its return from a revitalizing 10-game road trip that pulled them out of last place in the AL West. "Hopefully its a breakout game," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "During the streak, we have not been swinging the bat well. Weve been doing just enough to win, so hopefully this will get us to a different place." Weaver left with a stabbing pain in his lower back after facing only four batters, but Los Angeles lineup matched its season highs for runs and hits, capped the third game-winning homer of Trumbos young career. Jordan Walden (2-1) finished the nine-inning relief effort, escaping a bases-loaded jam of his own making in the ninth on Derek Jeters grounder. "I cant say enough for the guys that went out there (in relief)," Scioscia said. "Those guys stepped up and did great." Russell Martins two-out, two-run double in a three-run seventh tied it at 8 for the Yankees, who were on their longest winning streak of the season. Curtis Granderson hit his 15th homer and Mark Teixeira hit his fourth home run in four games, but New York left the bases loaded in the first and ninth innings. "A lot of guys had opportunities tonight, but any time you put eight (runs) on the board, you want to get that win," said Nick Swisher, who went 0 for 4 and ran into Granderson on a full sprint in a scary third-inning outfield collision. Phil Hughes yielded 11 hits and seven runs while pitching into the sixth inning of a rough start near his hometown for the Yankees. Hughes had a 3-0 lead in the first inning after Weavers exit, but the Angels erased the deficit just six batters into the bottom half of the inning, with Kendricks two-run single capping the rally. "That was the turning point," said Trumbo, who had an RBI double in the rally. "That showed some fight." Weaver had the first significant back trouble of his career in his first home start since throwing a no-hitter at Angel Stadium on May 2. Weaver gave up leadoff hits to Jeter and Granderson before Jeter scored when Gold Glove shortstop Erick Aybar booted a grounder. Weaver then stumbled awkwardly off the mound after a pitch to Robinson Cano, leaving the game after attempting a warmup pitch. "It felt like somebody stabbed me in the back," said Weaver, who will have an MRI on Tuesday. "Its disappointing, especially because you get up for games like this." The Yankees went up 3-0 -- but unlike the punchless team that was shut out a franchise-record eight times in its first 36 games, Los Angeles rallied for four quick runs, capped by Trumbos double into the right field stands and Kendricks two-run single. Trout hit his fifth homer of the season in the fourth. Morales delivered a bases-loaded double on reliever David Phelps first pitch in the sixth, driving home two runs and putting the Angels up 8-5. Hughes was born and raised in Orange County, attending high school 8 miles from Angel Stadium in Santa Ana. He had about 20 friends and family members in attendance for his first start in Anaheim since his sixth major league start in 2007. "On a night when the offence is doing so well and swinging the bats, its a tough one to swallow," Hughes said. NOTES: Yankees LF Brett Gardner took dry swings and RHP David Robertson played catch in both injured players latest rehab steps. Gardner is out with a strained right elbow, and Robertson has a strained oblique muscle. Gardner, who has been out for six weeks, will play in the minors before rejoining the Yankees. ... Angels RF Torii Hunter returned from a two-week absence to deal with his sons arrest in Texas. Hunter is still on the Angels restricted list, but seems likely to play soon. Ryan Broyles Jersey. The combination is just too much. David West scored 29 points Monday night and All-Star Paul George finished with 21 points, 11 rebounds and five assists, leading the Pacers past Chicago 111-101 for a 14th consecutive home win and into a tie with the Bulls for the Central Division lead. Barry Sanders Black Jersey. -- Tiger Woods made birdie at the first hole, only to watch his day go racing downhill from there.Douglas (The Phenom) Lima displays his championship belt on a desk at home with his other awards. Ryan (The Big Deal) Jimmo has started to keep his under wraps. "At first I had it out in my living room," said Jimmo, the Edmonton-based MFC light-heavyweight title-holder. "But sometimes you get a little blinded by the flashiness of it, so actually I put it in my closet and covered it with a blanket so I could forget that I was champion, so I wouldnt become too blinded by the bling of it. "I want to stay hungry and humble so I couldnt look at it or else I got a little hypnotized by it." Lima, the MFCs welterweight champion, takes a different view of the supersized belt on his desk in Atlanta. "Im planning on leaving it there for ever." Both mixed martial arts fighters will be putting their titles on the line for the first time Friday night at "MFC 29: Conquer" at Caesars Windsor in the Maximum Fighting Championships first showcase in Ontario. The card, which is being promoted by S.L. Feldman & Associates, follows on the heels of last Saturdays "MMA: The Reckoning," which marked the first officially sanctioned MMA show in Ontario. Lima (17-4) defends his 170-pound crown against former UFC veteran Terry Martin (21-8) while Jimmo (14-1) looks to retain his 205-pound title against Zak Cummings (13-2), a late injury replacement for Emanuel Newton. Also on the card, Marcus (The Irish Hand Grenade) Davis looks to bounce back from being cut by the UFC when he makes his MFC debut against lightweight Curtis Demarce of Brandon, Man. Other former UFC fighters include welterweight Pete Spratt, who takes on Demi Deeds and Hermes Franca, who will fight Robert Washington at a catchweight of 160 pounds. Local talent includes Windsor bantamweights Brent Franczuz and Chuck Mady, welterweight Josh Taveirne and middleweight Ali Mokdad. Jimmo defeated Dwayne (D-Bomb) Lewis for the vacant title at MFC 28 on Feb. 25 in Enoch, Alta., dominating a standup fight before the ring doctor stepped in to halt proceedings with Lewis eye swollen shut. Jimmo, 29, says he decided to stand and trade with Lewis. "I like standup, he likes standup, I knew the crowd would like it too." "In hindsight, it probably would have been a little bit smarter to take Dwayne right to the ground where I thought there was a big skill difference in us, instead of giving him a chance to kind of throw a one-punch knockout." While Jimmo may try to keep his belt under wraps, he clearly enjoys showing it off. In fact, he has given it its own name -- Belty -- while asking for submissions for a better moniker in the blog he writes for http://www.cagepotato.com. "People dont usually get to see a fighting championship belt," said Jimmo. "Its kind of a rarity ... People really enjoy it so I make sure I show it off as much as I can." Still he is aware of the pitfalls that can come with the shiny belt. "Everybody wants to beat you and everyones blowing your head up, telling you how great you are annd its real easy to buy into that a little bit too much.dddddddddddd" Cummings fills in for Newton, whom Jimmo defeated via unanimous decision at MFC 23. "Hes a wrestler, hes a lefty," Jimmo said of Cummings. "I think his standup is pretty rudimentary. But hes got a wrestling background so thats something Im going to have to watch out for." Jimmos preference is to keep the fight standing, but he is confident in his wrestling. He says only the close proximity to the Windsor date kept him from competing in the recent Canadian national wrestling championships in Edmonton. "I didnt want to get injured. But I think I could have placed probably top five in the country for heavyweights," he said. This will be his 10th MFC outing. Originally from Saint John, Jimmo moved to Halifax in his early 20s. He left for Edmonton a year and a half ago when he was invited to join the Hayabusa Training Centre. He lost his pro debut to Adam Braidwood at MFC 11 in February 2007 and has not lost since, other than a bout to get into the Season 8 cast of the "Ultimate Fighter" reality TV series. That does not count against his record because it was only two rounds. Jimmo says the lesson learned from that first pro loss to Braidwood was simple. "I hate losing. I absolutely hate it. ... its almost like a drug addiction," he said of winning. "Im kind of addicted to it, Im addicted to the feeling of winning." A 14-fight win streak normally attracts attention and offers for a fighter. "It has, but sometimes if you dont have tattoos and a Mohawk, and swear on camera a lot, apparently thats the in thing or something," Jimmo said. "Or go in there and just slug it out like Rock Em Sock Em Robots. If you dont fall in that category then sometimes youre chastised a little bit, but thats OK. "Ill just keep winning." The 23-year-old Lima, who defeated Jesse Juarez at MFC 27 in November to win the title, has five straight victories of his own. Born in Brazil, he and his family came to Atlanta when he was 11. He took up training in MMA when he was a freshman in high school and has fought full time for the last five years. His 22-year-old brother Dhiego Lima (4-0) fights Taveirne on the undercard. Douglas says they grew up "always fighting." But that has changed. "Since we started trained, everything stopped. We became more friendly. Its funny. But growing up we were always fighting. Always." The two spar in training but Douglas says they will never fight for real. "No, no money on this world would make me fight him. We spar of course, we train hard, but fight, I dont care what they offer, Im never going to fight my brother. Never." Martin, 30, does not get such a blood pass. But with 12 stoppages by KO or TKO, he can take care of himself. "Im not worried about his boxing," Lima said. "Ive just got to be careful, fight a smart fight. Were going to start standing so well see what got to happen from there." ' ' '
