LONDON -- Canada will get its choice of venue and surface when it faces top-ranked Spain in the first round of the 2013 Davis Cup World Group. While that means the Canadians will be able to maximize the talents of hard-serving Milos Raonic, team captain Martin Laurendeau doesnt think theres a surface out there that can slow down the powerful Spanish. "The Spaniards win everything from clay to grass, to indoors to outdoors," he said Wednesday on a conference call from Montreal. "Theyre good and they have the depth to really not be fooled by any kind of surface." Still, hosting the tie and having control over the venue provides the best chance Canada has against the Davis Cup juggernaut. They will be able to stay away from clay surfaces, which favour the Spanish and deaden the serve of world No. 15 Raonic. "Weve just got to be sure we pick the surface and the conditions that really will help to help maximize our No. 1 player," Laurendeau said. "Hes obviously shown that he can beat a lot of top players. "If we were to play in Spain, they would for sure play us on clay, even if its indoors. Now we have the opportunity to play on a surface that suits our game a lot more. We can control that, so thats the reassuring part." The two teams have met only once before, with Spain winning 4-1 at home on clay in 1991. Given Canadas weather and the Feb. 1-3 dates for the best-of-five series, an indoor venue was pretty much a lock. Laurendeau said hes sure Tennis Canadas phone will be ringing off the hook with offers to host, but theres no rush to commit and they will make a strategic decision. Canada is ranked No. 12 in the 16-team World Group and kept their spot in the competitions elite group with a 4-1 victory over South Africa in a playoff last weekend. Earlier this year, Canada lost 4-1 to France in the first round of World Group play. Laurendeau said tennis has great momentum right now in Canada and a match like this will only give that a boost. "But on the other hand, we are playing the best team of the draw. So its a tough assignment," he added. "But eventually, like Ive said before, we need to beat a seeded team and the best chance we have to beat a seeded team will be at home. "So, whether its France or its Spain or another country, we need to pull an upset somewhere. We do have players and we do have doubles who are in a position to win and upset a team at the moment. I really believe that." Spains captain Alex Corretja isnt taking the Canadians lightly. "Canada was one of the strongest rivals we could have gotten, not only for the quality of a team led by Milos Raonic but also because well have to play as visiting team just one week after the Australian Open, which means another long trip and time change," he said. "It will be a complicated tie." Elsewhere, Switzerland was paired against the Czech Republic in Wednesdays draw, setting up a potential head-to-head between two of the top players in the game -- Roger Federer and Tomas Berdych. The top-ranked Federer has a career 11-5 record against Berdych, but the No. 6 Czech defeated him in four sets at the U.S. Open. Berdych also beat Federer in the quarter-finals at Wimbledon in 2010 and at the 2004 Athens Olympics. Switzerland will be at home for the series. Federer does not always play in the early rounds of the Davis Cup, and his plans for 2013 are uncertain. In other matches, the United States will be at home against Brazil, and Argentina will host Germany. Its also France versus Israel, Kazakhstan versus Austria, Italy versus Croatia and Belgium versus Serbia. Federer played in last weekends playoff against the Netherlands, winning both of his singles matches to lead Switzerland to a 3-2 victory that ensured his country stayed in the World Group for 2013. Berdych secured all three points for the Czechs in their semifinal win over Argentina. The Czechs will host Spain in the final Nov. 16-18. The Czechs hold a 6-2 advantage against Switzerland, although the Swiss won the last time they met on home soil in 1998. -- With files from The Associated Press cheap jerseys china. Its a relationship that seems to work for Canadas back end at the Ford World Womens Curling Championship. Despite losing their first game Monday, Canada was still in the lead pack at 4-1 alongside South Korea and Sweden heading into Tuesday. Canada started slow in both its games, but came back to beat the Czech Republic 8-7 before falling 9-7 to Denmark in an extra end. "The difference between Beth and I is that Im aggressive and shes conservative, so we do have to meet in the middle and come to an agreement," Nedohin said. "We bicker like old Bettys. I call her my Betty and Im Dorothy to her. We laugh like were two old women trying to beat each other in a game of chess. I know its different than what other back enders do. Other thirds may play more the role of puppet, say yes and agree. "I like that she has the confidence to give me a different point of view, yet at the same time trust that Ill make the final decision and then were all-in to make that shot." Canada had little choice but to play aggressively Monday as they fell behind in both games and split them. The Czech Republics Linda Klimova scored five points in the second end to lead 5-0. Nedohins Edmonton foursome went to work scoring eight points, six of them stolen. Canada fell just short of a comeback against Denmark at night, however. The Canadians allowed single-point steals in the third and fourth ends to trail 3-0 before losing in an extra end to Lene Nielsons young team. Canada stole two to force an 11th end, but Neilson made her raise takeout for the win. Canadas second Jessica Mair did not feel well and took herself out of the game after the sixth end. Alternate Amy Nixon performed well off the bench, shooting 98 per cent in her four ends. Nielson, whose young team finished fourth at the world championship last year, didnt make the mistakes the Czechs did to open the door for a Canadian comeback. "Weve got room for improvement, but its only Monday," Nedohin said. "We split today and we knew we werent going to go undefeated. I thought we battled and showed great character." Her team is "slow out of the gate," as Nedohin put it earlier. The skip believes her team needs to get rocks in better position in the top half of the rings. "Owning the top of the house is key," Nedohin said. South Koreas Sun-Ji Kim and Swedens Margaretha Sigfriddson won twice Monday to join Canada at the top of the standings.dddddddddddd The top four teams at the conclusion of the round robin Thursday advance to playoffs. Kim is the early surprise at this world championship. Her team went 2-9 in last years world championship. With Pyeongchang winning the bid for the 2018 Winter Olympics, expect South Korea to make strides in all winter sports, including curling. Denmark and Switzerlands Mirjam Ott were 3-2 ahead of the Czech Republic, Scotlands Eve Muirhead, Russias Anna Sidorova, Germanys Melanie Robillard and Italys Diana Gaspari all at 2-3. Allison Pottinger of the U.S. ended a four-game losing streak with a 7-2 win over Scotland. Chinas Bingyu Wang, the 2009 world champion, was also 1-4. Curling fans discovered at this years national womens championship how entertaining Nedohin can be with her dramatic body language and facial expressions. The occasional butting of heads between Nedohin and Iskiw over strategy also drew attention at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts. "In the past, weve had some pretty good arguments out there about different strategy calls and we definitely laugh about it afterwards," Iskiw said. "We room together too and sometimes weve come back to the room too and said, This is what I was thinking, and were across the hotel room saying What are we going to do next time? "I used to believe it wasnt good for a skip and a third to room together, but for us it works because we get that out a little bit if we need to discuss things." Iskiw, 32, knows Nedohin has the final say. She chooses her time to make a stand carefully. "Everybody is talking about how shes emotional and I can feel that as well, when I cant press the limits with her," Iskiw said. "You can tell by her body language and the way shes talking, I will step back. "Unless I absolutely disagree with something, I wont be that strong. If Im disagreeing, Im really believing a certain way." Canada played an aggressive 10th to steal two and force the extra end against the Danes. Instead of hitting for two in the ninth to be one point down coming home, Nedohin opted to draw for her deuce and was far too heavy. "I love to draw and I usually own the four-foot to the button," Nedohin said. "I surprised myself. I always make those. I guess not always." Nedohin did play conservative in the fifth, when she chose to draw for two instead of trying a tricky double takeout on the edge of the rings for a possible three points. "I wasnt comfortable with that," Nedohin said. ' ' '
