CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Mat Latos finally got his first win for Cincinnati after putting his price tag out of mind. The right-hander pitched seven shutout innings against an old NL West nemesis, and Brandon Phillips homered and drove in three runs Tuesday night, leading the Reds to a 9-2 victory over the San Francisco Giants. Latos (1-2) came to the Reds in a four-player deal with San Diego that included starter Edinson Volquez and two prospects who were first-round draft picks. He found himself trying to pitch up to that high price in his first three outings. "Its always in the back of your mind," Latos said. "Its like youre saying, Wow, they traded four players for me. Whos to say youre worth four players, but its always in the back of your mind that, if you come here and dont perform, its going to be a long season." He was back on his game against the Giants, allowing only four singles. "Its good to get him that first win, big-time," manager Dusty Baker said. "He told me after his last start, Skip, that wont happen again. Hes a man of his word." Latos pitched out of the Giants only big threat, getting Nate Schierholtz to ground into a forceout after the Giants loaded the bases on a single and two walks with two outs. "He pitched like hes capable," Phillips said. "Its all about getting comfortable. He looked very good. I was very proud of him." Phillips hit a two-run homer in the first inning off Matt Cain (1-1) after being called out on a foul tip. The umpires decided the tipped ball hit the dirt, giving him another swing. The Giants have lost six straight and 11 of 15 at Great American Ball Park. Pablo Sandoval singled in his final at-bat, leaving him with a hit in each of the Giants 17 games. Its the second-longest hitting streak to open a season in franchise history, one behind Johnny Rucker of the 1945 New York Giants. Buster Posey hit a two-run homer in the ninth after Cincinnatis Sam LeCure threw a pitch inside, drawing a warning to both benches. Cincinnatis Joey Votto was hit in the seventh. Cain was in one of the best stretches of his career when he loosened up on a cool, breezy evening in Cincinnati. The right-hander had thrown 18 shutout innings in his last two starts, two innings shy of his career best. In those two starts, only four runners reached base. A foul tip led to the end of his scoreless streak. Drew Stubbs doubled in the first inning. Phillips worked the count to 2-2, then tipped a pitch that Posey caught by the dirt. Plate umpire Vic Carapazza called Phillips out, but first base umpire Gerry Davis indicated that the foul tip hit the ground before reaching the catchers mitt. Given the reprieve, Phillips homered to centre on the next pitch. Instead of having a quick, scoreless inning, Cain wound up throwing 38 pitches in the first. He got into a rhythm after that inning. Ryan Ludwick hit a solo homer off him in the seventh, when the Reds batted around for six runs. Jay Bruce and Scott Rolen each had two-run doubles in the seventh off Dan Otero. Latos win was his latest notable moment against the Giants. After San Francisco eliminated San Diego from contention in 2010, he signed three baseballs with "I Hate SF!" in the off-season as part of a fundraiser for major league players alumni association, insisting it was in good humour. "Thats old news," Latos said. "Ive moved on. People have moved on. The Giants have moved on." NOTES: Giants 1B Aubrey Huff missed his third game while attending to a family emergency. Cheap Louis Vuitton Outlet. -- The Ontario Hockey League all-stars arent used to losing to Russia.LONDON -- Arsenal staged a stunning League Cup fightback at Reading after trailing 4-0 in the first half on Tuesday, advancing to the quarterfinals with a 7-5 extra-time victory after Theo Walcott scored a hat trick. Walcott netted in injury time in both halves, and then in the last minute of extra time as well in a game that always seemed to offer up a new twist. "It was an unbelievable game. Im absolutely knackered now," Walcott said. "Weve scored seven goals away from home -- it was great going forward. Maybe defensively it wasnt great at times, but were in the draw and thats what matters." Arsenals performance in the first half was so poor that some Gunners fans left the stadium after the team conceded a fourth goal in the 37th minute as Reading dominated against its Premier League rival. But after Walcott pulled one back just before halftime, he took the game into extra time with a last-gasp equalizer in the sixth minute of stoppage time. Substitute Olivier Giroud had netted the second for Arsenal and Laurent Koscielny, who earlier scored an own goal, made it 4-3 in the 89th. Marouane Chamakh put Arsenal ahead for the first time in extra time with his first goal in almost a year, but Reading drew level again when Pavel Pogrebnyak made it 5-5 with four minutes to go. Walcott then completed his hat trick by slotting in a rebound from Andrei Arshavins effort, and Chamakh lobbed goalkeeper Adam Federici in the closing exchanges to ensure Arsenal advanced. "You always see new things in our game, thats why its never boring," Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said. "It was a tennis match today. They had a fantastic start, we were not sharp and it was 4-0 and could have been one or two more. ... You cannot play for Arsenal and give up." Reading manager Brian McDermott was aggrieved that Walcotts goal that took the game into extra time came more than five minutes into stoppage time when only four had been signalled by the fourth official. "If its four minuutes, you dont mind another 30 seconds but not another two minutes," McDermott said.dddddddddddd"I was waiting for him to blow his whistle but hell have his reasons. ... What happened tonight was extraordinary." On a thrilling night for English footballs second-tier knockout competition, three Premier League clubs -- Southampton, Sunderland and Wigan -- were beaten by lower-league opposition. The biggest shock came at Wigan where fourth-tier club Bradford won a penalty shootout 4-2 after the match ended 0-0. Premier League struggler Southampton exited after losing 3-0 to Leeds of the League Championship. Goals from Michael Tonge and El-Hadji Diouf as well as Luciano Becchios penalty kick steered Leeds into the quarterfinals for the first time since 1996. "We didnt perform anywhere near whats expected of a Southampton Football Club team," said Southampton manager Nigel Adkins, who made 11 changes from the side that lost to Tottenham on Sunday. "Forty-eight hours ago we had a high-intensity game and I made the relevant changes. I take full responsibility," he said. "We wanted to play tomorrow, but the powers that be wanted it to be tonight. But we gave the players who have not been in the team to the chance to show what they could do, and they did not take it." Middlesbrough advanced after Scott McDonalds goal secured a 1-0 victory at northeast rival Sunderland. "It was really disappointing," Sunderland manager Martin ONeill said. "We started off brightly in the game but Middlesbrough forced their way into the game and in truth we didnt create enough." It was a nervy night for Aston Villa, which only eliminated third-tier club Swindon 3-2 after Christian Bentekes 90th minute goal. Villa appeared to be cruising to victory after goals from Benteke and Gabriel Agbonlahor before halftime. But Swindon subsitute Miles Storey scored twice after the break to make it 2-2 before Benteke turned in a cross from Eric Lichaj. ' ' '
